One of the most beautiful places to visit is Costa Brava. It is a coastal region about 60 kilometers from Barcelona.
Costa Brava is home to a lot of history. After the Iberian people left the area, the Romans took over. This was when Christianity came to the region.
When it did, Spain started reforms and plagues decided on the number of people they wanted to live there without it becoming overcrowded. Then, around 715, the Muslim Conquest overtook the area.
The beaches along Catalonia's coast were used by the locals for leisure time and it was a popular place for people to visit while Costa Brava remained mostly undiscovered until the first world war.
Then, the country became less isolated after the Spanish Civil War. Due to the sunshine and the sea, people discovered that this part of Spain made for a nice destination to travel to.
With valid reason, Costa Brava is now by far one of the most popular and known vacation spots. It is a Mediterranean climate and is the best in the summer with the hot weather.
The most known thing to do when you go there is to kayak. There are packages online that provide an ultimate day of fun in the sun while kayaking, snorkeling and sightseeing.
There are many corners, coves, virgin beaches, caves, grottoes and rocks to discover. While paddling on your kayak, you will find a different way to discover all of its corners, some of which are extremely hidden. An adventure for everyone, as long as you feel like paddling.
The excursion is a beautiful way to escape the city, immerse yourself in breathtaking coastal landscapes, and paddle to hidden beaches, rocky caves, and volcanic cliffs. The excursion also ends with a group picnic alongside the Mediterranean and free time to relax, followed by a round of beers or sangria at the end of the excursion.
All of the instructors are professionally certified by the Spanish Sports Association and depending on which company you chose to book from, the tours come included with full injury insurance.
One of the caves that the excursion takes you in is called the Cova d’en Gisper. It is known as the longest sea cave that can be found on the Costa Brava. It is located in Begur, among Aiguaxelida and Aiguablava coves.
The entrance of the cave seems very narrow but the second you kayak into it, you will notice that it stretches. It stretches for almost 150m and it is possible to kayak right to the end.
It also has two different sections: la Galeria, which occupies the first 90m from the entrance, and the Sala Final, where you will run into a small rocky island. You can sit down in this area and take a break from all of the kayaking.
This sea cave is best reached by kayaking due to the narrowness of the entrance.
After kayaking and exploring caves for a while, the leader of the excursion eventually lets people swim and snorkel for about an hour if they want to. This part also includes cliff jumping off of some of the many rocks scattered throughout the area.
Although the water is extremely cold, it is quite refreshing on a hot day. That is why this excursion seems to be so popular over the summer.
Oscar Garcia, tour guide in Costa Brava, further describes the popularity of the excursion he leads during the summertime.
“I have to plan out my summer,” says Oscar, "I get called to work almost every day of the summer to lead an excursion because of the heat and tourists that visit in their free time."
Tourists make this excursion very known. Because the majority of the people that go on this excursion are tourists, they offer either English or Spanish tours. They try to be as inclusive as possible to make the trip enjoyable for everyone.
Hazel Springer, a visitor from California, describes her interest.
"I feel like it was something that I needed to do," says Hazel, " I travel the world all the time, but this excursion was definitely a core memory for me."
Hazel further explains her experience.
"Although the water was cold, it was perfect." says Hazel, "The weather balanced out the cold temperature of the water."
Another amazing thing about this excursion is that if you feel like the water will be too cold for you, the leader of the excursion gives you an opportunity to grab a wetsuit before making your way to the kayaks.
A lesson on how to kayak is also given by the instructor before going out into the ocean.
Lockers are provided to put clothes and electronics in. Putting your phone in the locker really gives you more of an opportunity to live in the moment and appreciate the beauty of the Mediterranean sea without any distractions.
If you did want to bring your phone though, there are little shops on the beach where you can buy a waterproof lanyard for your phone that will protect it.
When the kayaking exploration is complete, you are given the opportunity to sit down and eat the food that is provided by the leader of the excursion.
The leader also gives free time to explore the shops and activities that are located on the beach.
There were many activities on the shore including beach volleyball, paddle boarding, going on the playground or even just laying out in the sun.
Then, after a long day of the excursion, the bus takes everyone back to the initial meeting spot. There are many different excursion options that may last longer than others but a lot of them range from 4 hours to 9 hours.
So grab a partner, drinking water, sun protection, your swimsuit, a towel and a change of clothes and book the excursion to Costa Brava that will leave you at loss for words.
