When one thinks of Barcelona the sports, the nightlife, and beautiful beaches instantly spring to mind. But what if this part of Barcelona never existed? Well before the 1992 Olympic Games the city was a completely different place than today.

The 1992 Olympics transformed Barcelona into the city we know today. Before the Olympics the beaches in Barcelona were an afterthought. They didn’t exist. Today millions of tourists per year flock to these beaches for a leisurely day or to enjoy the plentiful nightlife.

The art of the Barcelona Olympics shows the many venues used in the games.

This event changed the city as we know it today and provided a much needed pride for its residents that have called Barcelona home for decades. It even provided a much needed sense of pride of Catalonia and its people.

Gabriel Mattos said, “I am 60 now lived in Barcelona my whole life … we have sport, we live for sport … the Olympics made me and everyone proud it is the best thing to happen to this city after Messi.”

The Olympics became a focal point in rallying the people for an eventual push for Catalans independence years later having the nation represented on a global stage. The Olympics recognized Catalan as one of its official languages, included in the signage of all venues, and in all official Olympic documents.

Although the ’92 Olympics are not a distant memory by any means it is still a historical moment in this cities history that often gets overlooked by many and deserves to be discussed and acknowledged as a cultural shift. This is due to the world finally taking note of Catalonian culture in the mainstream media. It is a turning point that is still discussed by many today.

The Olympic Legacy Today

Today there is a large controversy surrounding the Olympics. Many times, it has been seen that the Olympics and its construction can destroy cities and leave them falling behind for years to come. From London to Rio de Janeiro, to Beijing, modern Olympics have cause countless headaches for host cities.

This did not happen for Barcelona. Two full miles of beachfront were created to attract tourist to the games that are world famous to this day. The roads, or Rondas, in Barcelona were created to reduce highway congestion and create a walkable city. Countless parks were also created for visitors and to create tourist attractions.

Many of these parks can be visited today and you will not even know they were created solely for the Olympics. It shows how well done the city planning was done for this event.

As the Olympic hosts the city also hosted the Paralympic Games and awarded athletes a medal that included Braille.

The beaches that are the host for the world famous Barcelona nightlife are also only there due to the Olympics wanting to create a tourist attraction.

The Olympics in Barcelona are looked at favorably and largely touted as the reason the city is so culturally significant today. It is truly the turning point in the city’s modern history.

The construction and planning of these Olympics was done flawlessly. There are very few if no rotting stadiums, useless infrastructure, or forgotten areas as seen in other cities. Instead, the Olympic infrastructure has been reclaimed for tourists and locals alike.

It is a modern day miracle this went so well and was a flawlessly planned out contributing to the local area 30 years later and for the foreseeable future.

Step into History

The Barcelona Olympic is one of the most iconic Olympics of all time as can be seen with the ’92 Dream Team. Tourists and most importantly fans of these moments want to be able to step into this history and its possible.

Micheal Jordans shoes and the Olympic game ball are on display at the museum.

Parc Montjuïc hosts a majority the Olympic venues that can be visited to this day. It is a beautiful park that is packed full of history and stories at every single corner.

The park is home to the Barcelona Olympic Museum hosting countless memorabilia from Olympic and sport history. This is a must see museum for anyone remotely interested in the Olympics.

Replicas of all the past Olympic torches and medals are all on display. An interactive exhibit with an entire database of Olympic history is at the heart of the museum for anyone looking to examine the archives of sport history.

Tourist Márcio Muños said “Sport changes the world and brings us together … the museum is small, but the history here cannot be replaced … I want to visit the Olympics one day.”

The Olympic stadium is a great place to bring lunch and will be the temporary home of FC Barcelona.

Included in the former Olympic area are the Olympic Rings and cable cars that provide a beautiful view of the entire city of Barcelona. These cable cars are a must see for anyone visiting the city even if they are not interested in the Olympics.

The Olympic Stadium is still operational and a great visit. FC Barcelona will be games in this stadium in upcoming seasons due to the Camp Nou being renovated. Tourists can walk into this stadium during the day to see where the games took place. It is a very simple stadium without many modern amenities, but still gets the job done.

Catalan Athletics

Speaking of FC Barcelona, the ’92 Olympics was a major discussion point in Catalan independence movement.

With Catalan flags being displayed to the entire world, Catalan art being spread, and the Olympics taking on a Catalan identity Spain was left on the back burner. The official ceremonies were still promoting Spain, but it was clear to everyone who the true host nation was.

Catalans culture has also been proudly pushed in the modern day through sport. A prime example is through football, or soccer. Catalonian flags are draped through multiple stadiums by fans and stripes of the Catalan flags are displayed by fans.

Players and coaches such as Pau Gasol, Pep Guardiola, and Xavi are all proudly Catalan and are heroes of the region through their sporting achievements.

Pau Gasol is one of the most famous Catalonian athletes winning multiple NBA Championships and a part of multiple Spain Olympic teams.

National identity has been a very important topic in Catalan and is shown directly through sports.

Local Lui Candido discussed “we don’t have a national football team or Olympic team, but we know our athletes and want them to win … we come together by sport and our Catalan athletes make us proud.”

It is evident sports are ingrained in the culture and history of Barcelona and the ’92 Olympics will forever symbolize this.
